How to create an abstract portrait from Super Dynamic Shapes

Here I’ll show you how to achieve an abstract portrait of a girl by using Phantasm and VectorScribe. These not only help to create dynamic shapes but can also restore the dynamic status if it’s lost at any point in your workflow.

Step 1

In this tutorial I’ll use the photograph face (credit to lijinbo78). Paste the photo into the artwork (File> Place …).

Step 2

Take the Dynamic Shapes Tool (VectorScribe plug-in) and open its panel (Window > VectorScribe > Dynamic Shapes panel). Select the Dynamic Polygon Tool and set the number of sides to equal 3. Create a dynamic triangle, then set the radius of the rounding corners in the tool’s panel.

Step 3

Drag the dynamic triangle into the Symbols panel, and save it as a new symbol. This symbol will remain selected in the panel.

Step 4

Select the photo, then go to Effect > Phantasm > Halftone… and set the parameters shown in the image below.
