Adobe Illustrator Tutorial: How to Merge the Text Blocks into One

posted by: Iaroslav Lazunov, in Freebies / Free Scripts/ Comments: 6

Some designers often ask questions while working in Adobe Illustrator, namely how a couple of text blocks can be merged into one? On the forums of the vector graphics the solution to this question is often discussed. The suggested variants are usually laborious and time-taking. Today I will tell you a simple and, what is important, fast way to merge a number of the text blocks into one.

We will use the MergeText_AI script for that. This script was developed by the Ajar Productions Animation Studios.

This extension installs a script that will merge the text (including the text on a path) into one text object, while retaining the style attributes of the individual pieces, including the character styles as well as the paragraph styles (if the separator includes a return character).

You can download the MergeText_AI script by clicking on the button below:

Install the scripts into the  following folder:

  •
  • For Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5\Presets\en_GB\Scripts
  •
  • For Mac: Applications /Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5\Presets\en_GB\Scripts

To illustrate the work of the MergeText_AI  script we create a couple of the text objects.

Select the text that you want to merge together and go to the File > Scripts > MergeText_AI. If you’re using Illustrator CS3 – CS6, you will be prompted with the dialog box where you can choose your sorting orientation and a custom separator. If you’re using an earlier than CS3 version, you will not be prompted with a dialog; the script will start running using the default settings sorting the topmost, then the leftmost, with a separator of "[><]". You can then run the Find and the Replace and replace the separator with the characters of your choice.

Let’s take a look at some variants of the merging of some text objects depending on the set parameters in the dialog box

I hope that while using my small tip about the merging of the text blocks in Adobe Illustrator you will be able not only to solve some of your technical problems while you edit the text, but also save your time which you can spend on your creativity.

Hi dear the script is very good. smile
But i run into a problem when edit schematics diagrams for example an resistor have R128 and it is broken like this R12 8 i can fix it using this script but the problem is that there are around 500 of this kind of broken words,is there a script or function in AI CS6 to fix them separately so they not mix all in one text box?
